After being on a healing journey for 4 few years now, I’ve came across books that have completely changed my life – no exaggeration. Had I not read these self-books, I’d still be searching for answers and seeking to be someone outside of myself. Sometimes you need to read on a specific topic in order to expand your mind deeper by consuming what you can’t explain yourself. Here are 10 self-help books that I’ve read and highly recommend separated by category:

Finding Your Purpose
- The Four Agreements say to be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best. This book was so good I read it in one sitting. It invites you to detach from stories that are no longer serving you and forces you to confront the ways that you’re playing into your own suffering. I plan to read this book once a quarter.
My Rating: 10/10, timeless
- The Alchemist was the perfect book to read after The Four Agreements. This boy goes on the journey of finding his “personal legend”. Throughout the book, he learns to follow his intuition, inner knowing and signs that he receives from God while learning to trust the process. Although this is a spiritual book, I think the lessons in this book are applicable to anyone.
My Rating: 10/10, timeless
- Untamed: To be your most untamed self, you must unlearn what you’ve been told about who you are. Glennon Doyle rips apart the idea that we should be someone particular and emphasizes that being our truest selves is what is most important. In order to find our truest selves, we have to follow the urges that we’ve buried due to people pleasing. A lot of us spend our daily lives in pilot mode and Untamed helps you realize the areas in your life where you’re holding back or being too rigid. After reading this, you will find yourself sighing with big relief and ready to step into your new chapter of freedom.
My Rating: 10/10, timeless
- The Little Book of Big Lies: A Journey Into Inner Fitness asks us one main question. What lies are you telling yourself about your life and how do those lies prevent you from living the life you deserve? If you struggle with self victimization and rigid boundaries, this is the book for you. Lifford takes the concept of physical fitness and emphasizes inner fitness instead. There is still such a huge stigma around mental health so I am completely here for this concept. Throughout the book, she teaches you to change your self view, move through fear/change and gain a deep sense of self acceptance.

- The Mountain is You: This is one of my favorite books I have ever read. It’s so easy to understand why this book have five stars! Brianna Wiest goes over very complicated issues (almost every emotion you can think of & how to cope with it) and breaks them down in a compassionate way with suggestions to move forward. If you struggle with self sabotage, letting fears hold you back, or feel stuck in life – read this and thank me later. Enough said!

- After the Rain includes gentle reminders for healing, courage and self love. Alex Elle has a beautiful way of mixing poetry, affirmations, meditation & storytelling in one book. The chapters are labeled as lessons revolving around self-love, identity, change, love, forgiveness, comparison and suffering. After each chapter, there is an affirmation, journal prompt or meditation that allows you to dive into the chapter deeper for more reflections. This book made me feel so seen that I sobbed many times while reading it. It’s a beautiful book for overall healing.
My Rating: 9.5/10
- Codependent No More is the book for overcoming codependency. If you find yourself enmeshed in relationships, managing other peoples emotions, taking on responsibility that isn’t yours, controlling the outcomes for other people’s lives, overly invested in people’s problems, etc. then this book is for you. At the end of every chapter, there are questions that you can reflect on and journal to bring you more clarity.

Relationships
- All About Love says everything you think you know about love? Throw it out. All About Love has a very unique approach about what love actually is. “The world love is most often defined as a noun, yet… we would all love better if it was a verb” hooks says. bell hooks deconstructs what society has taught us love is through a feminist perspective and shares her journey with seeking emotional connection from others.
My Rating: 10/10
- Set Boundaries, Find Peace is a 101 guide to setting boundaries. Every relationship in your life needs boundaries from professional to romantic. Boundaries create clarity about where someone else ends and where you begin. Nedra Tewwab makes it extremely simple to understand what boundaries are, the different type of boundaries and how to implement them in your life. This book also emphasizes coping with how life changes once you begin to implement boundaries.

Building New Habits
- Atomic Habits is a slow burn. Your brain may be so jam packed with new information when you first start reading this and that’s normal. Atomic Habits teaches you how to build new and effective habits to serve the life that you want. James Clear makes it easy to understand the brain’s process and gives you the blueprint of how to make them shake. This is another book I’d like to read once a quarter!
